background checks are a bad idea because…criminals won’t like it?

I want to make this as clear as possible.

  • 93% of gun owners favor universal background checks.
  • 89% of Republicans favor universal background checks.
  • Even 85% of NRA MEMBERS favor universal background checks.
  • And 100% of Stuff That Matters Blog writers favor universal background checks.

And the NRA is strongly against universal background checks, for reasons they are having trouble explaining.

Wayne LaPierre

Yesterday at a senate judiciary committee hearing on gun violence, Wayne LaPierre, executive vice-president of the National Rifle Association, came under intense questions and, after a lot of evasive answers and avoidance techniques, was forced to admit that the NRA’s opposition to gun control has grown more extreme over the past 15 years. I listened to his testimony this morning on my way to work, and it was truly bizarre. In the course of the four-hour hearing that also heard impassioned testimony from the former US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, LaPierre was forced to admit that the NRA no longer supported the idea of extending federal background checks on private gun sales at gun shows.

A little background: It is already illegal for certain people to buy guns. If you’ve been convicted of domestic violence, in fact if you’re a convicted criminal of any flavor, if you’re extremely mentally ill, if you’re a fugitive, if you’re a drug addict, you can’t buy a gun. UNLESS of course you find a way to avoid a background a check. And that’s the problem – it’s super easy! Right now you only have to go to a gun show, or respond to a print ad.

One of the weirdest things our friend LaPierre said was, “If you extend the background check system, criminals won’t comply with that law.” Well, and I say this as a professional, mature adult, NO DUH! That’s the point, genius! It would be a hell of a lot harder for unstable people to buy guns if they couldn’t avoid a background check to do so. (The committee members took him apart on this one.)

President Obama is trying to make sure that all gun buyers are subject to background checks. Curse that unreasonable, communist, freedom-stealing, anti-American tyrant.

And the NRA is having none of it – they are going to fight this all the way, thereby destroying what little credibility they still hold on to.

  1. “President Obama, the tyrant, is trying to make sure that all gun buyers are subject to background checks. And the NRA is having none of it – they are going to fight this all the way, therefore destroying what little credibility they still hold on to.”

Are you saying the NRA has _ANY_ credibility left?…
