The “culture wars” have been going on since before the founding of America – the Civil War, women’s suffrage, prohibition, desegregation/civil rights, religion in school, voting rights, abortion/reproCulture-Wars-Webductive rights, science versus faith, gay rights and more. In each of these there is/was a battle between tradition/faith (always in part justified by the Bible and conservative theology) and rationality/social progress. It’s a constant struggle over the meaning of America.

Blind9This Easter, if you are one of the 72% of people in this country who self identify as Christian, ask yourself that retro and corny question: “What would Jesus do?”

The Christian church has a troubling legacy of joining in with the conservative culture in oppressing and harming people with less power. It has supported slavery, opposed women’s rights, fought child labor laws, campaigned against civil rights, and much more, all the while legitimately using the Bible to defend these positions.

Let’s not add another chapter in the long story of Christian oppression. Gay people getting married doesn’t hurt anyone. Oppressing people and denying them their rights truly does.

What would Jesus do? What DID Jesus do? If he were around today would he spend his time signing petitions and picketing and teaching against gay people? Fact is, the only (and I mean ONLY) people Jesus did behave that way against were the conservative religious people who, because of their religion and their reading of scripture, oppressed others.

How about this Easter we don’t be those guys.

Illinois Tornadoes Blamed On State’s Gay Marriage Law By Right-Wing Religious Group

(Thanks to Steve for finding this on Huff post.)   And check out this link (find the slide show near the bottom of the page) for all the horrible things that gays have caused in the last several years.  Damn gays.

images-252While the full extent of damage caused after severe tornadoes ripped through Illinois last weekend has yet to be assessed, one right-wing religious group has offered one eyebrow-raising explanation.

Robert Ritchie, Executive Director of America Needs Fatima, a project of the right-wing American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family, and Property, has linked the deadly tornadoes to Illnois’ approval of same-sex marriage earlier this month.

As Right Wing Watch pointed out, Ritchie wrote in a blog post:

The massive tornadoes that hit Illinois after the passing of the same sex “marriage” bill, has stimulated many people to reflection. In it, some see God’s chastisement; others see it as yet one more merciful warning from Providence; others yet deny both options and give various reasons.

Unfortunately, it isn’t the first time the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community has been blamed for a natural disaster.

Last year, chaplain John McTernan linked Hurricane Sandy to LGBT people and President Barack Obama’s backing of marriage equality. While most of McTernan’s wrath was directed at Obama, he had some choice words for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, too.

“Obama is 100 percent behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem,” he wrote at the time. “Both candidates are pro-homosexual and are behind the homosexual agenda. America is under political judgment and the church does not know it!”

Earlier in 2012, McTernan pointed to the fact that Hurricane Issac coincided withSouthern Decadence, New Orleans’ “Gay Mardi Gras.”

“New Orleans is still hosting Southern Decadence with open homosexuality manifesting in the streets of the city,” he wrote in a blog. “It could be that God is putting an end to this city and its wickedness. The timing of Hurricane Isaac with Southern Decadence is a sign that God’s patience with America’s sin is coming to an end.”

images-221What do you do when you’re a politician live on television and a pastor who is against marriage equality asks you why you support marriage rights for all? You take note from Australia’s prime minister, Kevin Rudd, a devout Christian, and do exactly what he does in these amazing four minutes.
